APTA elected to provide a submission into AITSL’s initiative on enhancing Indigenous Cultural Competency in the Australian Teacher Workforce, because even though we are not authority on evidence-based approaches to improving Indigenous cultural competence we know that many professional teaching associations in Australia have developed their own relationships with Indigenous individuals and groups to support their own members. As these PTAs are already engaged in the work of supporting teachers and educators to feel more confident in selecting resources and strategies to improve the cultural safety of their classrooms, we strongly advocate for the voice of teaching associations in important initiatives such as this.
